Publishing your first outline

Publishing an outline is the highest-value thing you can do here. It replaces every student in your section separately transcribing your syllabus: and it makes their dates official instead of guesses.

1. Build the outline

Two ways, and you can mix them:

A running total shows whether the weights reach 100%. It is the fastest way to catch a missing item.

2. Adopt a student outline instead

If students in your section have already uploaded one, the community blueprints panel lists them. Expand Review to see the full dated list first: never verify one blind.

Adopting it makes it your outline, promotes its dates to official, and removes it from the community pool. It is often faster than starting from scratch, since a student has usually already done the transcription.

3. Preview as a student

Preview as student opens the real course view your students will see: the same components, filled with your outline. Check the dates and weights here before publishing.

4. Publish

Publishing makes your outline the teacher-verified blueprint for that course and section. It is pinned above community uploads, and students who import it get dates marked official.

Publishing is live. Editing a published outline updates what students see immediately: there is no separate draft-then-release step. Get it right in preview first.

5. Post an announcement

The announcement composer posts to every student enrolled in that course. It appears on their Today screen and on the course page, with the date it was posted.

Announcements can be edited or deleted afterwards, and an edit is visibly marked as edited: so a corrected deadline never looks like it was always that way.

What students cannot see

Nothing about you beyond what you publish. And you see nothing about them: no grades, no standings, no who-imported-what. The portal is publish-only by design.
